Logo Design: Alberta Biodiversity Festival

Company: Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo

The Alberta Biodiversity Festival is an annual celebration of the province’s ecosystems, conservation efforts, and native species. Following its renaming, I was tasked with developing a unifying logo for the festival, a collaborative initiative between Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo and Bow Habitat Station.

The identity needed to authentically represent Alberta’s ecological diversity while aligning with Government of Alberta brand standards and reinforcing the event’s shared conservation mission. To visually unite both organizations, I developed a logo system rooted in strategic iconography and provincial brand alignment.

Creative Direction

The mark integrates a whooping crane, representing the Zoo’s Species Survival Plan and terrestrial conservation efforts, alongside a fish symbolizing Bow Habitat Station’s focus on aquatic ecosystems. Together, these elements communicate ecological interconnectedness while clearly representing both partners within a single cohesive composition.

The Government of Alberta’s signature “Sunset” color palette was incorporated to ensure official alignment and institutional consistency. Avant Garde Gothic typography from the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo brand was selected to balance the organic illustration elements with a clean, modern structure, maintaining legibility and versatility across digital, print, signage, and environmental applications.

Impact

The resulting identity establishes a bold and recognizable presence for the annual festival, designed not just for a single year, but to endure and evolve over time. Its timeless visual identity ensures long-term relevance while allowing flexibility for future iterations.

By reinforcing the event’s collaborative conservation mission and provincial significance, the identity strengthens recognition year after year. It extends seamlessly across digital platforms and printed materials, on-park signage, and throughout Bow Habitat’s event communications, creating a cohesive and lasting presence for this annual tradition.
